You will be asked to look at the work of some famous photographers (those whose work has stood the test of time and influenced generations of image makers after them.)  Be honest about your responses to them but remember they have their reputation for a reason so try not to be totally dismissive of their work - if you don’t like it/get it the examiner may take this as a sign of your stupidity not their lack of talent (like dissing Shakespeare!)

It is worth investigating the equipment and materials available to these photographers at the time they were working - you can look pretty stupid telling the examiner that a particular photographer turned their photos into black and white if they were working before colour processes had been invented!

Mastersofphotography.com is a good place to start looking.  Also be aware that the serious photographers will have published books and will have had books published about them.  Try to get hold of these (libraries, book shops, extracts at Amazon) READ their ideas and what people say about them.

Use this space to talk about a photographer whose work you have discovered this year and liked.

Julia Margaret Cameron was the first major photographer I came across in Ireland at about the age of ten in my father’s employers library. I encountered her again while working in the National Museum of Photography,Film and television where I got to see actual Camerons.
